The Position
2023 Summer Intern - Automation Engineer
Department Summary
The production facility makes pharmaceutical proteins from mammalian cells using large-scale production techniques. The internship’s group provides technical support and stewardship for cell culture operations of the process, which focuses on mammalian cell culture growth and production of drug substance. We play a key role during all aspects of the product lifecycle, from transfer into the manufacturing facility through commercialization and ongoing monitoring of operations, to ensure consistent process performance.
This internship position is located in VACAVILLE.
Key Responsibilities
Work with team members on current projects to strategize on various roadblocks that arise through project life cycle
Help support various automation issues that arise during operations
Develop a high level overview of all stand alone control systems on site and how they integrate with higher level systems
Propose a new electronic/repository solution to control software master versions
Understand system lifecycle documentation within a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) environment and create a high level overview of lifecycle documents that exist for existing system
Apply Data Mining and Data Visualization technology to provide tools to analyze performance of industrial automation systems in both Vacaville Cell Culture Production plants.
Mine data to determine system performance metrics with intent to determine indicators of system health and to determine objective truth about the systems' capabilities and limitations
Design, Document, Build, Debug, Deploy, and Support visualizations that will help to provide objective analysis of system performance with varying levels of demand on the system
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2023.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.
Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.
Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities.
Who You Are
Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering and/or science-related field (eg. Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Biochemistry, etc.); preferably completing a degree in 2023 or recent grads within two years
The ability to work independently under limited supervision.
High level of demonstrated initiative, exhibit flexibility in work approach and demonstrate strong follow through and accountability.
Must be able to work on a team with diverse skills and objectives and interact with customers in a productive manner.
Operational and technical troubleshooting skills and creative, flexible problem-solving skills are preferred.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $21.00 - $50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
