Division Responsibilities
The Legal and Assurance Division is part of the Corporate Operations Group and provides
support to the Health portfolio through the provision of a range of Legal Services and
assurance activities. Legal and Assurance Division comprises the following Branches:
- Advice and Legislation Branch.
- Corporate Assurance Branch.
- Corporate, Commercial and Litigation Branch.
Branch Responsibilities
Corporate Assurance Branch (CAB) provides advice, assurance and support to departmental
functions delivering Health and Aged Care programs and policies. This includes providing
professional business and integrity assurance services to the Executive and shaping
departmental corporate and business planning approaches. CAB also supports the
department by leading the department’s projects management approach, developing and
enhancing its risk management framework, providing comprehensive business continuity
support, delivering value-add internal audit services, and through our liaison with external
scrutiny entities.
Section Responsibilities
The Assurance and Audit Section oversees the department's internal audit function in
partnership with internal audit service providers including delivery of the Internal Audit
Work Program and other assurance activities. The internal audit function is supported by
the Department of Health Assurance Framework and the Assurance Panel Procurement
arrangement. The team also manages the department's relationship with external scrutiny
entities such as the Australian National Audit Office, the Commonwealth Ombudsman and
the Joint Committee of Public Affairs and Audit. Portfolio Support Unit The Portfolio Support
Unit has four objectives to improve delivery confidence through targeted oversight and
assurance across the Health project portfolio:
- Enable delivery assurance and visibility to Senior Executives.
- Build project management capability.
- Support the delivery of government initiatives, and internal projects.
- Provide Portfolio-level analysis to inform investment decisions.
- Directly support the effective operation of the Digital, Data and Implementation
Board.
The Program Assurance, Planning and Risk Section manages the department's business and
risk planning processes and the risk management policy and framework. The Section is also
responsible for implementing the Business Continuity Management Framework, and
ensuring corporate insurances are in place for professional and public liability.
Key Responsibilities
These positions provide the opportunity to utilise technical skills in assurance, procurement,
project management, financial management, stakeholder management and/or contract
management. The responsibilities for these positions include:
- Providing technical advice, education and guidance to business areas on a range of
assurance and risk issues.
- Developing and managing a range of internal departmental and external agency
stakeholder relationships.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of initiatives supporting the
delivery of the department’s assurance service offering.
- Supervising and managing a team to deliver outcomes, identify opportunities and
provide excellence in corporate service delivery.
- Composing and performing quality assurance on minutes, briefs, reporting and other
documentation for the Senior Executive and senior governance committees.

documents for the Senior Executive.
- Strong staff development skills, with an ability to identify and build the skills and
knowledge required by members of staff.
