About the Role


The Head of Retail Bank Legal is responsible for leading the Retail Bank Legal team who support and advise the Retail Banking division of the BOQ Group. This role sits across the multiple brands of the BOQ Group including BOQ, VMA, and ME Bank and supports both Corporate branches and the Bank’s Owner Managed branches.

This role will be responsible for driving engagement of the Retail Bank Legal team with the business, influencing strategic development of products and processes, and dealing with operational aspects of the Retail Bank .

  • Reporting directly to the Group General Counsel and Company Secretary, you will be responsible and accountable for the strategic management of all Legal retail banking issues including transactional, lending, insurance and franchise matters for the BOQ Group.
  • Establishing a strong working relationship with the Group Executive Retail Banking and CEO ME Bank and the key retail banking leads across the brands and in Group Compliance and Group Risk.
  • Working with the Group Compliance function, provide legal advice on regulatory matters as they relate to retail banking including under the Banking Code of Practice, the National Credit Code and privacy matters.
  • Provide product support including drafting terms and conditions, advising on new product launches and any other queries relating to retail products.
  • Oversee and manage legal advice for marketing and advertising of retail products.
  • Oversee ongoing time critical legal advice for the service delivery of BOQ's customers including to branches, business support and broker units including in relation to settlements.
  • Provide and oversee legal advice in relation to customer remediation programs.
  • Advise on current and impending regulatory change that impacts, amongst other matters, consumer lending.

About you


To be successful for this role, you will have the following experience and skillsets:

  • Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia.
  • Extensive experience in a senior legal role in-house and/or private practice (10+ years PQE).
  • Prior experience leading teams will be looked on preferably.
  • Expertise and working knowledge of relevant retail financial services and banking laws including under the Corporations Act, ASIC Act, BCOP, NCCP Act and Privacy Act together with a strong working knowledge of retail terms and conditions, consumer lending and applicable regulatory change.
