The opportunity


We are excited to announce that we have a fixed term opportunity (contract until 31st December 2024) for a Health and Safety Advisor to join the Health and Safety team delivering on the Western Sydney Airport – Surface and Civil Alignment Works (SCAW) based at Western Sydney for Sydney Metro.


Reporting to Deni Murray, the Senior Manager Health and Safety, this dynamic role for a Health and Safety professional experienced in large civil infrastructure projects or a local engineer (Civil/Structural) seeking to contribute and add value to the Health and Safety function whilst actively participating in the exciting future of transport within Western Sydney Parklands.


Situated in a greenfield environment, this busy role is responsible for site surveillance and verification activities across a number of locations along the Western Sydney Airport alignment extending between Orchard Hills and Western

Sydney Airport. The work will be predominantly on site and travel between sites will be required.


The role will also ensure that all Sydney Metro Health and safety policies, protocols and procedures are applied within the Project.


This role works collaboratively across project, functional teams and delivery partners to provide a range of specialist and advisory services to support the development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety systems and governance to ensure the on-going compliance of Sydney Metro (SM) with all relevant health and safety legislative, regulatory and incident response readiness requirements.


Responsibilities included but are not limited to:


  • Implement and administer health and safety policies and procedures and ensure alignment with Sydney Metro policy, standards and procedures
  • Providing independent verification of health and safety and risk reports / assessments, where required, to identify significant safety concerns, ensure the consistent application of the relevant provisions of the project Safety Management System, verify the suitability of the methodology used, and validate the conclusions and recommendations made
  • Maintaining expertise and keeping abreast of current and emerging health and safety best practices, Government policy and statutory requirements, relevant legislative and regulatory requirements particularly in relation to health and safety.
  • Engaging all stakeholders who have a range of different priorities in varying contexts to ensure agreement can be reached in regards Health and Safety and associated matters.
  • Clearly identifying any non-compliance issues and create working solutions to ensure compliance
  • Provide professional advice on health and safety issues as necessary to support compliance and change control processes across the project lifecycle
  • Undertake site and other investigations and validations, ensuring clarity and implementation of recommendations where appropriate
  • Assist in investigation and resolving any problems, complaints, issues raised in consultation with Sydney Metro team and Delivery Partners

About you


Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience is essential and this role is identified as a Rail Safety Worker (RSW).


Highly effective communication skills and advanced stakeholder management where you can apply a collaborative and solutions focus approach are key to the success of this role. It is imperative that you can demonstrate evidence of relevant experience in delivering Health and Safety on large scale civil infrastructure projects.


The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are adaptable to change, possessing a resilience, challenge and growth mindset.


This is a ‘boots on the ground’ role where the successful candidate is expected to work on site.


Salary and benefits

This role is offered at Transport Grade 8 $120,423 - $134,872 plus superannuation.
