POSITION OVERVIEW

The Infectious Diseases Department at the Canberra Hospital provides a busy inpatient and consultation service, with close ties to Infection Prevention & Control, the Microbiology laboratory, Hospital in the Home, Antimicrobial Stewardship, the Canberra Sexual Health Centre and the ANU Medical School. There are currently nine Infectious Diseases physicians, two advanced trainees in Infectious Diseases, one basic trainee, two interns and two Microbiology registrars. The Canberra Hospital provides the trainee with an opportunity to gain experience involving a broad range of infectious diseases, including general infectious diseases, infections in immunocompromised patients, tropical diseases and travel health, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, HIV medicine and sexual health. There are multidisciplinary clinics and meetings with a number of other departments, including Haematology and Orthopaedics.

DUTIES

Under limited direction of the Clinical Director you will:

  • Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of CHS under the supervision and direction of Consultant Medical Practitioners. The clinical management includes acute admissions, inpatient care, outpatient clinics, phone advice, interdisciplinary consults and clinical handover.
  • Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff and medical students.
  • Work within and support the multidisciplinary clinical team, including Antibiotic Stewardship and Infection Control units.
  • Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, clinical audit that contribute to the quality of patient care, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research.
  • Participate in the general medical registrar after-hour and on-call rosters which entails evening, night, weekend shifts and depending on the level of experience, the Infectious Diseases on-call roster.
  • Maintain adequate and legible medical records and ensure that the clinical team completes discharge summaries in a timely manner.
  • Comply with the policies and requirements of the ACT Medical Board and the policies of CHS. This includes the promotion and application of workplace.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

    Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
    Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in MBBS and eligibility for membership of the appropriate professional organisation
    Hold a current drivers license.
    Success in the FRACP Part 1 Examination

    The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work.

    You will need to understand how the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.

    You will need to fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and other related frameworks.

    Proficient computer literacy skills, as you will be responsible for completing clinical documentation in the DHR and using other CHS IT systems.

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

    Undergo a pre-employment Occupational Medicine assessment, screening & vaccination process
    Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.

WHAT YOU REQUIRE

These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your resumé and experience:

  • Proven proficiency in the practice of Internal Medicine, with an interest in Infectious Diseases, including depth of knowledge, clinical skills, time management skills, written communication and interpersonal skills between other medical staff, patients and relatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and teaching to junior medical officers, medical students and other medical staff, as well as a commitment to ongoing professional medical education.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, provide leadership, and work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
