The Eye and Ear has almost 60 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24 hour emergency eye and ear, nose, and throat service. In a typical year the Eye and Ear cares for over 220,000 patients, with over 160,000 outpatients nearly 44,000 emergency patients and over 17,000 inpatients. The hospital is currently undergoing a major redevelopment to create a modern internal structure, improve access for patients and visitors and staff.

About the Role

The Communications Coordinator actively promotes the Eye and Ear and its achievements to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. The role is responsible for the delivery of all hospital publications, internal newsletters, social media content, and is the primary point contact for the management of website edits and digital improvements. The role also coordinates any media activity. The 2022/2023 period will see the culmination of the Eye and Ear’s redevelopment project which will require significant support from across the hospital’s marketing and communications team.

Key responsibilities:

1. Work within an ethically and legally sound framework. Ensure responsibilities are undertaken in accordance with the Eye and Ear policies and procedures, Code of Conduct and applicable legislation.

2. Information Technology (IT) skills that are commensurate with the requirements of the role.

3. Coordinate Hospital publications. Work with internal stakeholders to deliver all major hospital publications. This includes researching, writing, editing and preparing content for publications including:

  • Annual Report

  • Annual Review

  • Quality Account related content

  • Sight and Sound donor newsletter

  • Regular staff newsletters

  • Promotional material

4. Develop and coordinate Digital Communications

  • Write, edit and upload online content including for the Intranet, Internet, social media and e-newsletters as required

  • Create visual content such as basic web banners and tiles

  • Review and report on digital analytics across web, social media and e-newsletter distributions with a view to tracking and recommending improvements.

  • Analyse current trends and benchmark with other organisations to suggest digital improvements in line with best practice delivery

5. Build and maintain positive working relationships with key internal stakeholders such as clinicians, the executive team, hospital managers and research partners. This may include participating in hospital working groups as required to support communication objectives.

6. Maintain high levels of ethical standards and professionalism adhering to hospital policies and procedures on privacy, open disclosure, and ensuring consent for participation by patients and staff in hospital approved media activities and publications.

7. Respond to media enquiries, drft and dessimate media releases and statements and identify opportunities for media engagement.

8. Other duties as directed by the Manager, Marketing and Communications.

All appointments are subject to a satisfactory Police Record Check, a working with children check (if applicable) and evidence of vaccination status All staff must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (3 doses) and for clinical staff, patient facing staff and staff working in clinical areas it is a mandatory requirement to provide evidence of a current influenza vaccination.
