Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position within Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The position is primarily located at the Mental Health Centre, Nepean Hospital campus, with a focus on the Acute and High Dependency Units and with community mental health teams based in the Hawkesbury and Penrith LGAs. Applicants are likely to build an affiliation with a specific CMHT.

This permanent position provides timely and need-adapted care to people presenting for specialised care to acute mental health inpatient and community mental health settings. In addition, the successful applicant adopts a clear medical leadership role especially in relation to the inpatient units and their capacity to support demand, collaborate with other teams and services, and maintain high standards of care. The successful applicant actively supports interdisciplinary collaboration, and the meaningful involvement of consumers and carers in clinical and service-related decision making. The successful applicant participates in a District-wide after hour’s roster.

  • Possess or be eligible for: registration with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA); Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) or equivalent as provided by the Health Insurance Act 1997 and the Staff Specialist (NSW) Award; current driver’s licence. Demonstrated commitment to Continuing Professional Development including capacity for reflective practice relevant to the Scope of Clinical Practice of the position.
  • Proven capacity and/or demonstrated experience and/or qualifications in the provision of effective high quality mental health services in different settings; demonstrated commitment to person-centred, recovery oriented, family inclusive, trauma informed and need adapted principles of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and work collaboratively with interprofessional teams (including the peer, nursing, and allied health work force) and with other teams, agencies and health services, in the provision of high quality therapeutic care that is sensitive to biological, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual domains.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate, negotiate and collaborate at a high level, both verbally and in written form, and to helpfully engage with and negotiate conflict and differences. Word processing skills necessary to complete expert documentation in the electronic record.
  • Demonstrated skill and commitment to the teaching and supervision of medical staff and non-medical colleagues consistent with contemporary supervision and educational standards, to the support and education of medical students, and to the principles of interprofessional learning.
  • Qualities, skills, attitudes and articulated values consistent with a senior medical practitioner working with persons receiving mental health care across the age span and their social networks, who provides leadership to fellow medical colleagues and who always demonstrates the highest ethical and professional standards.
  • Experience with or proven capacity for activities that will improve the quality of service provision, including clinical governance and quality activities (such as audits and risk management activities) and appraisal of varying forms of evidence. Demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.
  • Familiarity with and support of basic, clinical and applied research activities relevant to the needs of the Mental Health Service and its staff and the ability to draw on values and research concepts in the appraisal of evidence, guidelines and quality improvement activities.
