POSITION OVERVIEW

- Fixated and Lone Actor Grievance fuelled violence assessment centre (ACT FLAG)
- CMH – Child and Adolescent at Bimberi Youth Justice Centre (CMH- CA)
- CMH – Adult at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (CMH – A)
FMHS Mental Health Court Assessment and Liaison Service (MHCALS)
This position is based at the ACT Law Courts and Forensic Mental Health Services office at 1 Moore St. MHCALS operates Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:30 hrs. Custodial and laundry allowance applies. Eligible applicants may also apply for post-graduate qualification allowance. Note: This is a 12 month temporary position.
DUTIES
Under minimal direction of the Team Manager, Community Forensic Mental Health Services, you will be expected to conduct high quality mental health assessments and make appropriate care referrals for people engaged with the ACT Law Courts and the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT). As a senior mental health clinician within the Mental Health Court Assessment and Liaison Service (MHCALS), you will be required to provide direct clinical assessments of people at different stages in the legal process including acute triage assessments of people newly in custody. You will prepare brief professional reports on general mental health issues for the ACAT and ACT Law Courts within professional scope and with regard for issues of consent and confidentiality. You will be required to liaise actively with inpatient and community mental health services to be a conduit for information to and from the court and to facilitate referral and follow-up where appropriate.
As a senior clinician in FMHS you will also be required to initiate and participate in quality improvement and service development activities, provide clinical supervision to other health professionals, and engage professionally and sensitively with a range of external stakeholders. Senior clinicians working within FMHS are supported via access to specialist clinical supervision, a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment, and continuing professional development opportunities appropriate to area of service provision.
You will:
- Provide high-level clinical assessment and treatment recommendations and referral of people engaged with the criminal justice system who may be experiencing significant mental health issues.
- Conduct triage mental health assessments, and recommendations regarding disposal to the court for people fresh in custody who may be experiencing acute mental health concerns and facilitate appropriate diversion (including under s309 Crimes Act 1900) or referral as required.
- Conduct timely assessments and prepare brief, well-written and professional general mental health reports to the court and ACAT within required timeframes.
- Provide responsive and articulate clinical opinion and advice to the court and ACAT on general mental health presentations and concerns with regard for your responsibilities under the Privacy Act.
- Actively engage in professional supervision and development and contribute to planning and implementation of quality improvement, education, and research activities.
- Contribute to policy development and identify and address clinical governance issues to ensure a best practice standard of care and safety.
- Promoting activities and processes that support compliance with the National Standards for Mental Health Services and contribute to the governance structure by active participation in organisational development, committees, and other relevant working groups.
- Undertaking other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the section with the delivery of person and family centred, safe and high-quality patient care.

These are the key selection criteria for how you will be assessed in conjunction with your cirriculum vitae and experience:
- Demonstrated clinical competence in mental health assessment and treatment planning for people with a broad range of mental health presentations.
- Demonstrated excellence in communication, including communicating clinical concepts with influence to non-clinical audiences, negotiating with internal and external stakeholders, and the ability to produce high-standard written reports to a professional audience.
- A demonstrated knowledge of current mental health and other relevant legislation that will be critical to working in a specialty forensic service.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current mental health services and other social support services within the ACT.
- Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
