The Opportunity

This position will provide valuable experience in the management of patients undergoing Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) and CAR-T cell therapy. The role includes experience with helping to run a multidisciplinary BMT unit, with exposure to aspects of management including pre-transplant assessment, transplant planning, the transplant process itself and complications of BMT. Additionally, the role will include experience with the assessment of patients for CAR-T cell therapy, their management on the ward, and post-discharge care. We anticipate this aspect of work will cover 50% of the Postgraduate Fellow's involvement.


The Fellow will participate in establishing protocols for the assessment and documentation of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), including involvement with patients undergoing extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP). Additionally they will participate in the development and setting up of research projects for the early diagnosis, as well as monitoring of GVHD, including biomarker and T cell research projects. The candidate will also assist in the running of clinical trials in BMT. These projects will be utilizing our clinical and laboratory's expertise and we anticipate that this work will occupy 30% of the Postgraduate Fellow's time.


The candidate will also participate in the Long-Term Follow-up BMT clinic working in close collaboration with the BMT consultants, BMT co-ordinators and the Long-Term Follow-up Clinical Nurse Consultant. This will cover 20% of the Postgraduate Fellow's time.


Good problem-solving skills are required, including the ability to troubleshoot and make sound clinical decisions. The programme encompasses in-patient and out-patient clinics, pathology and radiology review meetings, a journal club and a seminar program.



What you'll be doing

  • The Postgraduate Fellow will provide high quality diagnostic, consultative, procedural and on-call specialty services in Haematopathology and Clinical Haematology, and will participate in teaching, research, quality improvement and administrative activities commensurate with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  • The Postgraduate Fellow will ensure a high standard of professional performance and, where required, the encouragement of an academic environment which supports research and development.

Selection Criteria

  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in Haematopathology and obtained Fellowship o fthe Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Clinical Haematology, and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award. Applicants expected to obtain Fellowship with the RCPA and RACP by February 2023 are eligible to apply.
  • Demonstrated commitment to basic, applied or clinical research and/or medical education and staff training.
  • Proven ability to work as a team member with effective communication, interpersonal skills and adaptability to work within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Demonstrated personal qualities including effective communication skills, motivation, initiative, time management and commitment to professional development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of clinical quality management, continuous improvement and a contemporary knowledge of National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) Standards and NATA accreditation processes.
  • Demonstrated contemporary clinical knowledge and technical expertise in the specialty of Haematopathology and Clinical Haematology.
