As a member of the Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ) Professional Service Program Transformation Team you will work with the VMware Canberra team to incubate and implement strategic defence related programs that will specifically focus on executive coverage and business impact.

Success in the Role: What are the performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

To excel in this role, you should possess extensive solution architecture and technical expertise, strong business acumen, and have the ability to clearly communicate at all levels with the customer. You will be a SME on Defence industry processes and will have hands on experience working with these. You will work with customers and partners to architect delivery of solutions, proof of concepts or pilot projects to make our customer successful.

Key job responsibilities

  • Collaborate with VMware field sales, pre-sales architecture and delivery to understand our customer’s needs, their business, how success is defined.
  • Possesses a deep knowledge of project management best practices and how to apply them in an effective yet pragmatic way across large, complex enterprise projects.
  • Seeks to solve customer business problems with existing programs and innovates to build new initiatives where there are no existing ones
  • Ability to apply strategic thinking and demonstrate understanding of requirements to execute.
  • Plays an active role in individual customer engagements for specific programs - driving teams to achieve customers’ business outcomes by managing issues, risks, decisions, and action items.
  • Takes proactive steps to ensure teams meet or exceed customer expectations.
  • Works effectively in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Interfaces with customer and internal VMware stakeholders which consists of senior leadership teams
  • Understands the operating styles of others as well as team/client relationships, team dynamics, and adjusts behaviour accordingly to succeed. Recognises environmental or cultural nuances and adapts.
  • Team player who effectively builds relationships with cross-functional team members, sponsors, key stakeholders, executives, and other individuals or organisations

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

You will partner across sales, services, strategy and marketing to understand customer priorities and requirements, and provide execution muscle to the team to enable our customer to take advantage of VMware capabilities. You will work closely with account executives and business units from across VMware to regularly review key customer engagement programs, identify gaps in offerings and recommend solutions.

As the Program Director you will be involved in the strategic direction of multiple IT Projects working closely with project sponsors, cross-functional teams, and assigned project managers. The right candidate earns trust through outstanding performance, effective communication skills, and a strong record of delivering results. They will have excellent project management skills and experience managing complex programs in large organisations. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively with executive customer stakeholders and deliver independently on both strategic and tactical program initiatives. Strong judgement and a demonstrated ability to influence without explicit authority are key to success.

  • Delivering significant change/transformation including hands-on experience leading cross organization programs.

  • Managing multiple projects at the same time, and navigating competing priorities and goals and using data and metrics to measure impact and determine improvements
  • Presenting metrics and progress against goals to senior leadership
  • Work closely with operations and program functions to establish optimum solutions to identified risks
  • Resolve ambiguity or conflict situations to bring teams and business groups into alignment; proficient in taking complex/technical subject matter and refining/presenting to the business at any level to result in understanding and appreciation
  • Technical problem-solving and analytical skills and escalation management in a complex environment

To reiterate, VMware is looking for a strong, motivated, independent, and energetic Program Director to act as a program integration and execution point; responsible to drive complex project requirements, cross-team communication, and execution accountability across both projects and BAU across the Defence industry portfolio.
