POSITION OVERVIEW
The Infection Prevention and Control Unit comprises a team of dedicated nursing staff working with the Infectious Diseases medical staff to minimise infection risks for patients, health care workers, and the general public.
The Unit strives for excellence in achieving this aim through ongoing programs including staff and public education, policy development and review, and surveillance of hospital-acquired infections; key input in location and equipping of new or redesigned clinical areas; outbreak management; and promotion of hand-hygiene and other infection control techniques.
DUTIES
Under limited direction of the Assistant Director of Nursing IPCU, you will perform:
- Manage the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of learning programs within the Infection Prevention and Control Unit.
- Ensure ongoing professional development programs meet the demonstrated need of the multidisciplinary health care team.
- Ensure that Infection Prevention and Control Unit policies and standard operating procedures meet the requirements of Canberra Health Services.
- Lead and foster a no blame culture to promote a learning environment that encourages regular timely feedback and open communication to the multidisciplinary health care team within Canberra Health Services.
- Monitor infection surveillance programs within the Infection Prevention and Control Unit and provide reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing.
- Review and evaluate clinical performance to identify staff development needs including monitoring of mandatory training and develop education strategies required to initiate appropriate change.
- Actively participate, support and contribute to the development and review of evidence-based policies and procedures, practice improvement initiatives, risk management strategies, clinical research and audits.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Mandatory:
- Be registered as a Nurse or Midwife or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
Desirable:
- Holds or is working towards tertiary qualifications in Infection Control.
- Have an understanding of how the National Standards and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) indicators align with this role.
- Fulfil the responsibilities of this role as detailed in the CHS Exceptional Care Framework, Clinical Governance Framework, Partnering With Consumers Framework and all other related frameworks.
Prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:
- Undergo a pre-employment National Police Check.
- Obtain a Compliance Certificate from OMU (Occupational Medicine Unit) relating to assessment, screening, and vaccination processes against specified infectious diseases.

- Proven ability to lead, manage and develop a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality services within the Infection Prevention and Control Unit and across Canberra Health Services.
- Experience in the practical application of the quality cycle, and the ability to monitor and achieve performance indicators in the infection surveillance programs across Canberra Health Services.
- Ability to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to deliver timely access to services for the Infection Prevention and Control Unit, staff and patients.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current issues and innovations in nursing within the Infection Prevention and Control Unit.
- Demonstrates a commitment to work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience and displays behaviour consistent with Canberra Health Services values of Reliable, Progressive, Respectful and Kind.
