What you'll be doing
- The incumbent will work as part of a small research team headed by a clinician researcher within a department with an established research track record over many years.
- The research team’s focus is on the development and utility of novel lung function tests (Multiple breath washout and Forced Oscillation technique) that may improve early detection and subsequent monitoring within important respiratory conditions. These novel tests can be used across all ages, including within the infant and preschool age range. The role will involve expertise in these tests.
- This role offers opportunity to develop skills in a variety of lung function techniques under supervision.
- Undertake research activities as part of a team.
- Produce and/or contribute high quality data for conference presentations, manuscripts and funding applications. Mechanisms exist within the research team to fund travel to conferences to present the data if the contribution warrants it.
- Help with the supervision or guidance of more junior research personnel working within the team across existing projects.
- Undertake research studies according to the approved study protocol, including:
- Recruit and screen patients ensuring enrolment targets are met
- Schedule attendance by children for study visits ensuring adherence to study protocols
- Conduct physiological tests, including novel tests such as multiple breath washout and forced oscillation technique, and relevant quality control procedures
- Enter data, manage paperwork, databases and spreadsheets
- Contribute to data analysis to provide summary statistics
- Expertise and advanced interpretation of data will be developed within this role.
- Assist in the design of protocols and analyse plans as required for specific studies.
- Contribution to the development of new research ideas/proposals collaboration with the team
- skills will be developed under supervision to perform lung function tests in specific patient groups, such as cystic fibrosis.
- The ability to perform these tests in younger age groups will be developed in the role.
- Become competent in a range of techniques relevant to the broad field of work within the Department of Respiratory Medicine
- Able to work independently
- Able to provide back up support for staff and students whose projects involve similar tests
- Develop technical expertise within the research group.
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Nursing degree or equivalent
Computer literacy – including statistical analysis programs (e.g. SPSS or equivalent), and microsoft word including excel and powerpoint (or equivalents).
Experience in the conduct of a research project for example application for ethical review, data collection and manuscript submission.
Effective oral and written communications skills
Experience of data entry into databases and in data analysis and use of statistical packages such as SPSS
Current valid NSW Class C drivers License

ASARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) 3 doses are required for Category A positions (refer to NSW Policy Directive PD2022_030 Occupational Assessment Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases).
ASARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) 3 doses are highly recommended for all other health care workers who have completed the primary course of COVID-19 vaccinations.
