About the role

This role is responsible for delivering a range of laboratory activities including coordination and provision of scientific and technical training and the ongoing review, development and quality management of laboratory practices to ensure compliance with operational standards and procedures, quality standards and continual process improvement.


The Senior Hospital Scientist will have a track record in somatic cell DNA testing including working with formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue and performing DNA testing for solid tumours. Experience in diagnostic report writing is required as well as general laboratory administrative tasks.


Applicants for this position must have a thorough and practical understanding of DNA testing, excellent communication skills and be able to work individually as well as part of a team. Additionally, an understanding of working in a NATA or equivalent accredited medical testing environment is required.


Working closely with the Head of service to implement key strategic directions leading to new diagnostic initiatives in precision oncology, the Senior Hospital Scientist will be required to perform, develop and validate new applications for cancer somatic mutation DNA testing using various technologies from allele-specific real time PCR, high resolution melting, droplet digital PCR to DNA-mass spectrometry assay and massively parallel sequencing.


We are looking for someone who

  • Holds a Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Has knowledge and experience in the delivery of pathology services for somatic cell DNA genetic testing including ICT issues around LIMS, patient information and QC systems.
  • Is experienced with report writing relevant to somatic cell DNA testing in cancer.

About working for SLHD

This is a Category A position. To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy (PD2022_030)
