The Position
Allygroup is seeking a senior legislation lawyer to work with our federal government agency client. The role sits in the agency's Legislation Reform team.

The team provides high quality, holistic legal services to support the development of legislation. You will provide assistance in drafting instructions, explanatory materials including explanatory memorandum and explanatory statements and responses to Parliamentary Committees.

Our client is ideally seeking full-time, and Canberra based candidates. The agency will consider candidates who live interstate and part-time arrangements where candidates can travel to Canberra on an ad hoc basis.

The role attracts excellent remuneration and is a 12-month secondment commencing in the new financial year, from 1 July 2022.

Core Responsibilities:

• providing comprehensive legal advice on the development and progress of legislation;

• supporting the team Manager in the allocation and prioritisation of matters within the team;

• using initiative to proactively manage own caseload, liaise directly with clients and stakeholders, and deliver high quality legal advice and services;

• supervising less experienced team members on individual matters, providing instructions, feedback, and formal review or sign-off of work and supporting the team members’ development;

• working collaboratively with other members of the Legal team on matters to deliver holistic legal services in support of the agencies business operations.

The experience you need to be successful:

Be at the Senior Legal Officer level with a minimum of 5 years’ experience (EL1 equivalent) in legal practice with a strong demonstrated experience in administrative law and statutory interpretation.

In addition our successful candidates will require the following skills:

• strong leadership skills;

• excellent interpersonal skills;

• strong attention to detail; and

• ability to oversee the work of direct reports and other junior staff including developing and building their capabilities.
