Eden Ritchie Recruitment are seeking multiple PO5 Senior and PO6 Principal Legal Officers to work in claims and litigation to provide complex and specialist legal support, as required, as well as undertake allocated legal requests collaboratively with clients and other lawyers where appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver high-quality and timely legal services and support across the Department, offering a strong understanding of the legislative and other legal and policy frameworks for the provision of public healthcare in Queensland.
  • Provide supervision, mentoring, training and professional development to a team of Senior Lawyers, Principal Lawyers, Paralegals, Students and Graduates, and work collaboratively and seamlessly with other Senior Principal Lawyers.
  • Build effective working relationships with senior officers within the Department with a strong focus on client service.
  • Be highly effective and advanced in oral and written communications with colleagues stakeholders at all levels.
  • Monitor and report on emerging developments in law and the provision of legal services in the health sector and government.
  • Drive, develop, implement and maintain appropriate systems to ensure continuous improvement in the delivery of cost-effective legal services for the Department in accordance with Queensland public sector governance and policy requirements.
  • Represent the Department in major initiatives with the central agencies of government, co-ordinate special projects as instructed by Chief Legal Counsel and be involved in the preparation of papers for officials and senior management.

Key Skills:

  • Ability to provide high-level technical legal and strategic advice and support to clients, in the focus area of claims & litigation, with strong knowledge of relevant legislation and government policy and procedure in this area and its application in the context of public sector health care delivery.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively and collegiately with team members and senior management, develop talent, value diversity and build effective teams to bring about the best use of resources and, using negotiation, facilitation and consultation, the ability to build credibility, trust and influence.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills necessary to produce well-reasoned, succinct, accurate and effective legal and strategic advice, submissions, briefs and reports.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to other team members and contribute to the overall cohesion and success of the goals of the Legal Branch in a way that values performance, improvement, collaboration and innovation.

Key Legal Knowledge:

  • Public and administrative law, human rights, health regulatory, and knowledge of the Queensland Health portfolio legislation
  • Workplace, industrial relations and WHS
  • Health and other information management (including confidentiality, privacy and information access schemes)
  • Litigation in Courts and Tribunals, alternative dispute resolution, commissions of inquiry and coronial inquests
  • Corporate and commercial law (including contract drafting and negotiation; procurement; ICT; clinical research; IP; construction; infrastructure and other major projects; joint venture advisory; property; funding; insurance)

Highly Desirable:

Experience in complaints, disputes and litigation including:

  • Judicial reviews
  • Contract and commercial disputes
  • Statutory prosecutions
  • Inquests, commissions, and inquiries
  • Claims and complaints management (including personal injury, discrimination and human rights)
  • Investigations, clinical reviews and conduct and integrity reviews
  • Class actions
  • Public sector corporate governance, risk and compliance experience will be favourably regarded.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Admission, or eligibility for immediate admission, as a Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of Queensland, and enrolment or eligibility for enrolment, to practice in the Federal and High Courts of Australia.
  • Minimum 2-4 years post admission experience. (pae)
  • Demonstrated core skills and experience in the areas of corporate governance, risk management and compliance and contribute to the development and implementation of corporate policy and directives and may also be required to perform work involving major projects and other Department initiatives.
