The Role:


The Paediatric Emergency Department at Northern Health is a separate collocated department accredited with ACEM and RACP for 6 months of advanced training. We endeavour to provide training opportunities to a mixture of ACEM, PEM and RACP trainees. We employ a diverse group of doctors, nurses, allied health and clerical staff. We promote a strong culture of teamwork and adopt the principle that we are all part of a large work family who support and respect each other.


We welcome full-time and part time applications and are flexible at accommodating individual personal needs.


As a Paediatric Emergency Registrar, you will experience a wide range of interesting and varied pathology and have ample opportunity to initiate and be involved in the care of a diverse mix of Paediatric presentations. You will be well supported by Paediatric Emergency Physicians, providing a unique learning experience in a non-tertiary Paediatric emergency centre.


We have a comprehensive Paediatric Emergency Education Program, which includes 5 hours of protected paid teaching per week. Our ACEM DEMT and RACP Supervisor of Training are readily available to assist and answer any questions. We have a very active Paediatric Emergency simulation programme providing regular opportunities to develop leadership and management skills, and consolidate learning.


There are ample opportunities to be involved in quality improvement and research projects which will help broaden your experience.


We have a close working relationship with our General Paediatric team. The General Paediatric department is accredited for training with the PEM JTC. We have a standing position available to PEM trainees looking to complete their Paediatric medicine term (6 months Paediatric medicine/6 months Paediatric ED). We also have relationships with other Melbourne Paediatric and Adult Emergency departments to assist with ongoing training needs.


To be successful in this role you will have:


  • Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Undergraduate medical qualification as a first degree is essential – MBBS, MD, PhD or equivalent
  • Registered trainee of RACP, ACEM or CICM
  • >ACEM trainee
    • Minimum of one year emergency medicine experience
  • >FRACP
    • Minimum of one year paediatric training
    • 6 months neonatology
  • >CICM
    • Minimum of one year ICU training
    • Aiming to complete the Paediatric requirement
