Summary:
The Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting all facets of environment needs within the company. These needs will cover our civil, asphalt and our concrete divisions. They are expected to provide sound judgment and support optimal decision making, as well as to provide advocacy and awareness of environmental concerns. The ES must understand compliance issues associated with Federal, State and Local entities. They must have a strong since of JHAs, knowledge of permitting procedures, a solid understanding of PPE and have conducted near-miss, accident and incident investigations. Additionally, they must be comfortable with hosting safety meetings, conducting, and documenting safety inspections.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to lead an environmental compliance for a project
- Perform regulatory research to determine compliance requirements with all permits and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation
- Coordinating all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy
- Promoting and raising awareness, at all levels of an organization, of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility
- Respond to project requests and needs for assistance with environmental compliance
- Obtain permits for new and existing projects
- Negotiating environmental service agreements and managing associated costs
- Perform and assist with environmental compliance audits
- Managing the development and implementation of an environmental management system
- Developing and implementing environmental strategies and action plans that ensure corporate sustainable development
- Working with Procurement on establishing sustainable procurement for all goods and services
- Identify, assess and reduce environmental risks to the company
- Draft and update environmental plans
- Perform and oversee field inspections and monitoring
- Identify wetland and sensitive environmental areas for protection and fencing in advance of construction activities
- Develop and conduct environmental protection and awareness training to staff at all levels
- Function as a principal technical advisor and coordinator for environmental issues
- Coordinate with relevant crews on their work locations, material needs, quantities
- Interpret and apply environmental specifications and drawings avoiding and minimizing adverse effects to the natural environment and local communities
- Prepare project FMCCs required reports and communication environmental risks to project management and leaders of the company
- Handle related duties as assigned.
- 5-10+ years of work experience with some exposure to regulatory requirements and compliance preferably in a construction environment (infrastructure experience would be ideal)
- Bachelor Degree in Environmental Studies or related discipline
- Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) designation is preferred
- OSHA 30, OSHA 40 HAZWOPER and related certifications are desired
- Working knowledge of District and Federal environmental legislation
- Highly motivated and self-managed to get things done right the first time
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong organization/time management skills
- Strong work ethic, detailed oriented, and willing to do what it takes to get the job done
- The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Uncompromising attitude toward safety
- Willingness and ability to travel and/or relocate to various job sites
- Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, which includes all eligible booster shots, except when vaccination is not medically advised or violates your sincerely held religious beliefs in violation of EEO laws, and
- Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug & alcohol screening.
