Role
Range 2 classroom teachers play a significant role in assisting the school to improve student performance and educational outcomes determined by the school strategic plan and state-wide priorities and contributing to the development and implementation of school policies and priorities.
A critical component of this work will focus on increasing the knowledge base of staff within their school about student learning and high quality instruction to assist their school to define quality teacher practice.
Range 2 classroom teachers will be expected to:
Have the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet the diverse needs of all students
Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers in the school to engage in critical reflection of their practice and to support staff to expand their capacity
Provide expert advice about the content, processes and strategies that will shape individual and school professional learning
Supervise and train one or more student teachers
Assist staff to use student data to inform teaching approaches that enable targets related to improving student learning outcomes to be achieved.
Role Description
The Instrumental Music Coordinator role requires a suitably qualified, experienced teacher with the ability to actively contribute to multi- disciplinary project teams in the development and implementation of instrumental music programs that enhance student participation in instrumental music as a vital element within a broad school curriculum. The Instrumental Music Coordinator will work as an integral member of the metro NEVR Instrumental Music Team, and possess highly developed organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to lead major projects.
Responsibilities
The role of classroom teacher may include but is not limited to:
Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students;
Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum program within the school;
Undertaking other classroom teaching related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal;
Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings; staff meetings; camps and excursions;
Undertaking other non-teaching supervisory duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to innovation by investigating, identifying and recommending opportunities for improvement in instrumental music.
- Contribute to the development of team and project plans through specialised knowledge in policy, programs and initiatives in instrumental music.
- Ensure that the allocated tasks/projects and responsibilities undertaken are of a high quality and achieved within required timelines, and make optimal use of available resources.
- Monitor and evaluate issues, consult with stakeholders and provide advice regarding the provision of instrumental music in the metro NEVR region.
- In consultation with the metro NEVR principals’ reference group, contribute to the identification of issues by recognizing opportunities for improvement and initiating actions to support improvement within NEVR instrumental music programs.
- Ensure that accountabilities and outcomes are met and regularly reported upon.
- Actively participate in the annual Performance and Development Plan review process.
Specific Duties
The metro NEVR principals’ reference group and regional leadership will provide support to the metro NEVR Instrumental Music Coordination Team in its specific duties to ensure the effective delivery of Instrumental Music Programs in schools across the region. Instrumental Music Coordinators will provide effective leadership and support for instrumental music teachers and schools in the NEVR, collaborating within their own team and with their respective leadership group to:
- Provide a coordinated regional instrumental music program to service the needs of instrumental music teachers and secondary schools and provide advice to the metro NEVR principals’ reference group and regional leadership regarding instrumental music service needs and issues across the region.
- Provide support and advice regarding the IM staffing needs of schools, teaching allocations, priorities in music education and curriculum issues affecting instrumental music teachers.
- Organise appropriate professional development activities for instrumental music teachers in metro NEVR.
- Provide secondary schools with assistance and advice on all aspects of their instrumental music program to ensure continuous improvement of student learning.
- Assist with the production and maintenance of computer-based written materials and databases related to school music programs and instrumental music staffing. A working knowledge of Filemaker-Pro and Adobe Design software will be advantageous.
- Manage or assist with the management of region-based activities such as the annual NEVR Youth Concert and ensemble workshops, and be prepared to work to deadlines in a fast paced environment, including working extended hours and occasional weekends in relation to major projects as needed.
- Regularly produce an NEVR instrumental music teacher newsletter.
- Provide advice to music coordinators/principals regarding the preparation of reports and submissions relevant to instrumental music e.g. the annual IM school survey. This includes overseeing a portfolio of schools and coordinating school visits at least once per year or more often if required. A driver’s license and reliable vehicle for this purpose is essential. Country travel will sometimes be necessary.
Other duties as required by the metro NEVR principals’ reference group and regional leadership.

VIT LANTITE
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.
Vaccination Requirement
For positions in special settings, a person is not eligible for employment unless they meet the vaccination requirements on commencement in the position.
Location Profile
Applications are invited from suitably qualified instrumental music teachers for a 0.4 EFT Instrumental Music Coordinator in themetropolitan North Eastern Victoria Region (NEVR). The role description and key selection criteria are included below.
The position is effective from 3 October 2022 to 28 March 2024 and includes a pro rata special payment.
In the 0.4 allocation, one day will be Friday, based at Mullauna Secondary College, Springfield Road Mitcham. The other day will benegotiated with the successful applicant, the metro NEVR Instrumental Music Team and, where applicable, their school Principal.
The successful applicant will be a member of the metro NEVR Instrumental Music Team and will work collaboratively with the metroNEVR principals’ reference group and the NEVR Service Support Branch Manager, to provide support to schools to improveinstrumental music program delivery, including provision of professional learning for teachers.
