About the role
Thiess is growing at an exponential rate in Western Australia with some exciting projects coming online and we can’t do it alone – we need a team of skilled and ambitious people to help us meet our goals and aspirations to diversify and deliver sustainable mining solutions. As our next Principal Mining Engineer based in our Thiess Perth Head Office reporting to the Manager, Mine Engineering, you will play a key role in our Australian Technical Services team. You will apply your Mining Engineering expertise and experience across a range of diverse applications, commodities, regions and mining methodologies, to support our operational projects and our work winning by finding cost-effective solutions for Thiess and our Clients.
In this role, your key responsibilities will include:
Providing mentoring and guidance to mine planning staff across Thiess’ head office and our operational projects
Manage key relationships with internal customers within Thiess’ head office and operational projects
Lead mine engineering resources and manage mine planning tasks in the preparation of client submissions
Providing advice on technical risks in mine plans and problem solving to implement mitigation strategies
Analysing mining operations as a wholistic system and identifying the critical value drivers
Providing Thiess projects with fit for purpose and timely mine planning and mine engineering services
Raising the profile of Thiess’ technical capabilities with clients and the broader resources market
Preparing data for periodic reviews of all critical mine planning inputs and reconciling actual vs planned performance
Participating in the development of mine engineering process documents, driving standardisation and governance across the global business
Identifying project risks from a technical, HSE and cost perspective during the mine planning phase
Please note that domestic travel is a requirement of this role.
About you
This role will best suit someone who has:
A tertiary qualification in a relevant technical discipline (for example Mining, Civil or Mechanical Engineering)
A minimum of 12 years’ experience in Mine Engineering with at least 5 years in operational based roles
Experience leading projects and small teams in a multi-disciplinary setting
A demonstrated ability to lead and complete life of mine planning processes
Advanced skills in Spry, Vulcan and Deswik suites of mining planning and mine design software
Exposure to and application of ESG elements as they relate to the mining process
Experience with commercial elements of mining contracts and their impact on mining operations
A strategic and innovative approach to problem solving and the ability to define critical value drivers (cost and revenue) within a mining operation
The ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organisation
Practical experience in risk management in mine design and planning
Previous experience working with various cultures
