The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking for people to fill a number of Senior Statistical Infrastructure Officer roles in our Statistical Infrastructure Branch.
This is an ongoing role at the APS 6 classification level.
The role can be undertaken at either of our offices located in Belconnen (ACT), Docklands (Melbourne) or the CBD of Adelaide, Brisbane, or Hobart, although flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.

To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience:
- People and project management skills and the ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement and deliver quality outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment
- Conceptual, analytical and creative skills, including the ability to critically assess complex information and recognise the links between interconnected issues to ensure coherent outcomes
- An ability to manage and develop a high performing team, providing direction to others regarding the purpose and importance of their work and engaging with competing priorities
- Oral, written and presentation communication skills including the ability to build and sustain relationships to work collaboratively with a network of key people internally and externally, and operate effectively in a team
- Awareness of the role of statistical infrastructure and its uses in the production of statistics and in support of policy development and program delivery through data driven analysis
- Knowledge of statistical registers and/or data and metadata management frameworks, processes and best practice
- Academic qualifications in data and metadata management, statistics, economics or fields with a strong qualitative or quantitative component are desirable.
About the role
Senior Statistical Infrastructure Officer responsibilities are varied, depending on the individual’s skills, their role and the requirements of their team. APS6 Senior Statistical Infrastructure Officers will lead their team to undertake a range of activities, including:
- Custodianship of ABS standards and classifications, encouraging their use to ensure the standardised collection and dissemination of data, leading to consistent data quality and comparability of data over time and across collections.
- Leading the maintenance and update of ABS statistical classifications and standards, for topics including occupation, religious affiliation, industry, language and ancestry.
- Shaping and administering the ABS Coding Strategy, including supporting the use of ABS coding tools by areas across the ABS to enhance the automation and reduce the costs of the production of classificatory statistics
- Providing business leadership for the development of coding tools as part of a multi-disciplinary team, ensuring strong stakeholder engagement and co-design with a range of organisations who will benefit from the tools
- Building and managing relationships with stakeholders across policy and program delivery areas (all levels of government), industry and other representative groups, and a range of functional and subject matter areas within the ABS
- Maintaining the ABS Business Register and deriving outputs from the ABS Business Register, such as survey frames for business-based collections and publications like Counts of Australian Business Entries and Exits.
About the business area
The Statistical Infrastructure Branch is responsible for managing, maintaining and supporting the use of a range of statistical infrastructure, including standards, classifications and the ABS Business Register used in the production of economic, social and population statistics and integrated data assets.
Recently, the branch has embarked on several large classification reviews and is driving the modernisation of coding – the allocation of textual responses to classification categories – in the ABS.
The Statistical Infrastructure Branch is located across five sites and embraces virtual teams and flexible ways of working. Teams are not all co-located.
